WELSHPOOL LIVESTOCK SALES
Messrs Morris Marshall & Poole and Norman Lloyd & Co. report on the auction held on Monday 27th September 2004.
An excellent entry of 6332 prime lambs, met with an easier trade, averaging 103.72ppkg.
Light lambs sold to 114.2ppkg presented by CE & R Emberton, Coedtafol, Berriew (aver 95.51ppkg) others to 111.6ppkg by DI Jones, Cwm, Carno and 110.4ppkg by AM Davies, Gyfylchau.
Standard lambs to 114.1ppkg by JM Clee & Son, Dolycwmfrwydd, Llanbadarn Fynydd (aver 104.53ppkg) others to 112.1ppkg by DR & MC Hughes, Lower Gwernycil, Meifod, 111ppkg by Higgs Bros., Cefn Llydan, Bwlchyffridd and 110.9ppkg by SJ Smith, Penybryn, Castle Caereinion.
Medium lambs sold to 112.5ppkg by DE & MC Morgan, Cefntwlch, New Mills (aver 104.15ppkg) others 110.8ppkg by DR Owen & Sons, Sandilands Farm, 108.9ppkg by RP & SE Wilde, Middle Sylfaen and 108.8ppkg by WR & AF Williams, Garthllwyd, Llanfair Caereinion.
Heavy lambs to 106.9ppkg by M & A Powell, Drefor Farm, Kerry (aver 92.3ppkg) others to 105.6ppkg by DG & JM Jones, Trefnant Hall, Berriew and 015.3ppkg (twice) by JE Jandrell, Lletyderyn and GP Pugh & Son, The Garth, Pantydwr.
Over 52kgs to 107.5ppkg by CE & TL Pryce, Tyn y Pwll, Cyfronydd (aver 92.57ppkg) others to 98.14ppkg by DE & KB Owen & Son, Rhallt Isaf, Llanfair Caereinion.
A limousin cross heifer, weighing 535kgs topped the prime cattle section with local butcher Rikki Lloyd purchasing for 127ppkg. This heifer was presented by IG & R Lloyd, Maesyglyn, Ffostrasol who also presented 4 other limousin heifers selling from 108ppkg - 124ppkg, with all three local butchers, John Langford, Rikki Lloyd and Corwen purchasing.
Light steers sold to 102ppkg, for a limousin cross steers presentedby DW Robinson & Sons, Upper Trefnant, Maesmawr and purchased by Mr Brian Evans of Corwen Butchers.
Medium steers sold to 89ppkg presented by WD Jones & Son, Upper Scafell, Newtown.
Heavy steers sold to 113ppkg presented by JC Davies & Son, Gelli Gethin, Llanfair Caereinion and purchased by John Langford. Others to 101ppkg (twice) presented by WE Bayliss, Rhallt and GHM Williams, Caethro. Overall average for heavy steers 90.14ppkg.
Medium weight heifers sold to 111ppkg presented by JC Davies & Son, Gelli Gethin, others to 110ppkg and 108ppkg both by IG & R Lloyd, Maesyglyn with Corwen Butchers purchasing all three. Medium heifers averaged 102.86ppkg.
Heavy weight heifers sold to 127ppkg by IG & R Lloyd, Maesyglyn. Messrs GE & RM Morris, The Belan sold a limousin cross heifer for 125ppkg and purchased by Corwen Butchers. Heavy weight heifers averaged 100.44ppkg.
With a fantastic entry of 3377 cull ewes, ewes peaked at £48.50 for a punch of 14 ewes presented by GW Jones, Cefndre, Llanfair Caereinion, with JW Jones, Blowty selling a single ewe for £47.50. Ewes averaged £21.55 per head. Rams sold to £56 presented by DG Pugh & Co., Birches, Llanidloes.
A much increased entry of store ewes were forward this week, with large numbers of sheep of all ages.
Top price of the day went to JM & A Jones, Wig for welsh mule yearlings at £93 and £88. Other noteable prices in the yearlings were £88 and £86 for welsh mule yearlings from ME Morgan & Co., Tynewydd, Llawryglyn. Two year old ewes sold to £78.50 for welsh mules from CG Davies and Son, Tynypwll and JT Mills, Penisarmanledd sold to £78 for texel 3 year old ewes. A small entry of organic ewes sold to £47 for speckled face yearlings from D Lewis, Bryn, Pantydwr.
More store lambs were presented and again met a strong demand from buyers. Top price of the day went to Messrs Gittins & Co., Giants Bank for suffolk tup lambs which made £44.50 and £41 for some texel cross tup lambs. Other noteable prices were £40 on two occassions for suffolk cross clean lambs from RF Evans, Llwydcoed Mill, Aberhafesp and texel cross theave lambs from Mrs EM & TM Davies, Gerddigleision.
A reduced entry of calves met with a sound trade on a busy Monday in Welshpool. Top price of the day was £260 for a limousin cross bull calf born 19/07/04 presented by EM & JR Evans, Priddbwll Mawr, Llangedwyn. A hereford cross bull calf from GF Griffiths, Ashcroft sold for £185. Freisian bull calves sold to a top of £18 presented by W Evans & Co., Upper Maen, Meifod. Overall 11 freisian bull calves averaged £15.02.
An entry of 45 cows and calves met with a much easier trade with many of the lots being hard sold. Nevertheless the best outfits were still well in demand with many people wishing to source the better quality.
Top price of the day was £1060 for a belgian blue cross 1st calver with a limousin cross bull calf at foot presented by FG & G Mountford, Middle Heldre. A similar outfit from the same home with a heifer calf sold for £840. Presented by RH Lewis, New House, Crickheath was a limousin cross 1st calver with a bull calf at foot which sold for £1020. A limousin cross 1st calver with a limousin cross bull calf at foot sold for £920 from EL Andrew, Trewern Cottage. A hereford cross 2nd calver with a limousin cross bull calf from Messrs Davies, Gerddigleision sold for £920. From the same home 6-10 year old cows which sold with charolais cross bull and heifer calves which sold from £650-£790. Three charolais cross in-calf heifers, incalf to a hereford bull sold to £460 presented by GR Kynaston & Sons, West Farm.
A breakdown of the prices were as follows:-
£1000 + = 2 lots, £900-£1000 = 3 lots, £800-£900 = 2 lots, £700-£800 = 8 lots, £600-£700 = 10 lots, £500-£600 = 6 lots, <£500 = 6 lots.
Store Cattle - A good entry of 431 store cattle were forward, including 182 organic.

182, the top entry yet of store cattle at the organic sale held by Welshpool Livestock Sales. Each sale exceeds the last with the quality cattle attracting more buyers.
It was a difficult choice for the judge, Mr RE Lewis, Bryn-y-groes Farm, Glyn Ceiriog who finally decided upon the following results:-
Best Bunch of 3 or more steers - DH Jones, Ddol, Llanbadarn Fynydd for charolais cross (477kgs - Blue CID) which made £580 and were purchased by G & H Jerman, Tynwtra, Llanwyddelan. The prize money was donated by Harvest Events Caterers Ltd.,
Best Bunch of 3 of more heifers - T Davies & Sons, Bailey Bog, Bwlchsarnau and were purchased by R & E Bowker, Rhysnant Farm, Four Crosses.
The prize money was donated by Roberts & Bumford (Agri-Health).
Best Single Steer - First and second - HD Pugh and M Wynne-Pugh, Tanycoed Ucha, Bryncrug for limousin cross (420kgs and 470kgs - Blue CID) which made £570 and £705 respectively with R & E Bowker purchasing both.
Third - GO & ML Jones, Pen-lan, Glyn Ceiriog for limousin cross (440kgs - Red CID) which made £490 and was purchased by Mr Williamson for Peplow Organic Farms, Market Drayton.
The prize money was donated by Maurice Fox Ltd.
Best single heifer - First and Third - T Davies & Son, Bailey Bog, Bwlchsarnau for limousin cross (370kgs).
Second GO & ML Jones, Pen-Lan, Glyn Ceiriog for limousin (420kg) which was purchased by G & H Jerman, Tynwtra.
The prize money was donated by Teme Valley Tractors (Welshpool) Ltd.
